In the first year, second semester of the Arizona State University’s Industrial Design Program degree plan, students are challenged with creating a lamp using a flashlight as the primary light source. In most cases, students find ways to hide the flashlight or contain it within a elegant yet minimal design. Students are further tasked with creating a package design for their lamps, given that packaging, while a graphic design discipline, falls into industrial design as well given the structural nature of the demands for protection in shipping and display.
